What can I do to stay safe online?
Remember that even if you have been chatting to someone online or by telephone, you don't really know them! They should be treated as strangers and all precautions should be taken to protect yourself. This should include;
- be selective about personal details and information until you have established trust of the other individual
- when meeting another member ensure that you meet in a busy place, where there are plenty of other people
- when meeting someone for the first time, make sure that someone else knows where you are meeting and arrange to check in with them if this makes you feel secure
- ensure that you arrange transport for the end of the date, especially if this is in the evening, so that you are not stranded at the end of the evening
- don't take any risks and put yourself in a vulnerable position
- be honest, if you are not comfortable with the person, make your excuses and leave
Treat other members with respect, but caution! Don't be frightened about meeting others, just be prepared and careful.
